USS Mendota

Beating her way up the James River possibly in pursuit of a pesky blockade runner, the Union side wheeler USS Mendota. This was a fun build

Hi All,

And hi, Madbrit. Fine build of your model. I'm not familiar with the boat, but it appears to be a double-ended, armed ferry. And if you know, what is the bumper-like construction at the bow end of the boat?

The boat is most likely named after, Mendota, Minnesota, one of the oldest towns in our state. The word Mendota is a Dakota word meaning, "the junction of one river with another." And fittingly, the small town of Mendota, MN is found at the junction of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers.

I like your modeling of the water, too.

Score and fold,

Thumb Dog

Shipbuild and Thumbdog, thank you for the compliments, much appreciated

Thumbdog, yes she is a double ended craft, a rudder both fore and aft to enable her to extricate herself from troubling situations without having to go about. According to the information I have Secretary Welles ordered some 30 similar craft for the fleet. The construction forward was meant to ward off or discover torpedos/mines that the dastardly enemy may have planted in the James River.

Thank you ct. Coming from one of our prime Civil War Navy designers I take it as a great compliment.

Beachead and Bob P., thank you for your compliments. Another member had built the Mendota long before mine and has a build report and, in my opinion, has done a better job on the model than my attempt. I will say, however, that it was a truly fun build that I enjoyed doing immensely.
