Peral Spanish Submarine - Heinkel Models
It's time now to start a new thread, this time in the sea waters instead of air and space.
This is Heinkel's model design of the First Military U-Boot, the "Peral", named after his inventor, Isaac Peral. Design thread by Heinkel here. I reviewed Peral's notes on Wikipedia, and there are 2 entries for it. I didn't like the first one, as there is a gap between 3rd and 4th paragraphs, as it goes from the approval of the project to the frustration of Peral, without saying why. Then I found a second entry for the submarine itself. But I found a couple of better descriptions for this vessel. Here and here. I liked this quote from one of those links: Isaac Peral is often considered the inventor of the submarine. This is not because his was the first submergible (SIC) vessel, but because his was the first submarine to be electrically powered, and to incorporate underwater torpedo-firing facilities. In this sense he might be better called the "father of the modern submarine". But the reality is that I bought this model from eCardModels because the appearance of the complete model from Heinkel, regardless of the history. Then I liked it more because of it. So here's the first steps on the model. I printed this model in letter size sheets. The model is designed to be printed in A4 size to have the 1:48 scale, so I guess my model is slightly modified on the scale. I printed the sheets on laser Docucolor printer. First photo. Heinkel's design is very precise. That I liked much. And I found a non expected paper strip design... it didn't fit the cone where it was suppose to be. But then I found that it was on purpose, so when you roll the cone, you can add the strip without issues. Second photo. Also, 3rd and 4th cylinder's inner rings did not fit as the instructions says (3rd and 4th photos), but again, you can fit them on the part of the cone where they can be glued, and again... no issues. |

Fantastic to see this thread. I am hoping to get a start on this model myself soon. I really like the finish Nando has done on this kit and you have done a beautiful job on the hull. I look forward to seeing this one as it grows.

Very well executed hull. It's - well - seamless. I always add the rings after forming the tube. If the tube is anything other than perfectly symetrical when formed, the ring won't fit properly anyway. Also, I found that if I glue the strip to the skin first, and then coax it into a tube by rubbing from the back, the paper stretches and the ring is always visible afterwards through the distortion in the skin.

Echoing what Don already said, the hull is superb - I wish I could get results that even came close to that. Your accuracy of cutting/sanding/fitting must be second to none....

Thank you friends for all your comments!
Sorry for keeping this thread in the mist, but I had some changes at work (I'll let you know on another thread)... but here are some updates. Here are the aft props and the complete rudders. The axis of the rudders are fixed, but they can be movable. And this is the turret skeleton. For the snorkel (I think that's what it is) I used phone wire. I still need to practice more on rolling micro diameter paper tubes. Next... the complete sub. |
