Yes, i downloades the pointy one, the illustration doesn't seem to indicate where the props go! And yes, this sub does look like something out of Jules Verne, dosen't it?!!! You have to click on the 1900's link on Toto's site to find it, Ships won't get it though they have some Vistorian era French Warhship models on there!

The model was cleaned up by the delicate hand of Charles Davenport, who sent me the jpeg when I couldn't properly download it. I don't know if he did any other recolor than that??

I really like these vintage models, wish I could find more on the internet! Guess it's because I would have given both legs and an arm for things like that when I was a kid!

Epinal models were originally printed on newsprint style paper.
it was not acid free. so the scans of the originals are yellowed and darkened.

I use Paint shop pro
so after I download the file.
I use the Automatic color balance filter and Set the color temperature to about 7500.

Then I set the brightness /contrast to 8/15 and then I do that again.
This removes the yellowing of the paper and brightens the colors to the hues of the original prints.

Cleaning up is not the problem (as you describe, it's quite easy with Photoshop or anything like that). The real difficulty is finding a higher definition picture. This summer (well - what I mean is the recent period of continuous rain), I spent some time tracing as many Epinal pictures as I could. Virtually all of them were of such a low definition that printing would give very low quality results... Understandable: most of these pictures are from people who offer their rare, original copies for sale for a reasonable, but high price.

PS. A big thank you to Charles Davenport for helping acquire this rare fish.
A big you're welcome! That is a really cool looking model!
