La Couronne 1636 ( scratch build ) 1:96

The ship was cca 70 meters long, the crew were cca 630 men.
There were a lot of scepticism about her nautical behaviour because of greatness of the ship, but after her maiden voyage it found out to be excellent / in contrast of Sovereign which nautical behaviour was horrible /
She hasnīt a long career - she went out of service in 1645.

Plans of the ship are free on the net ( I think they are here on this forum too ), I have them in two books at home also. Already exist the book written by Vincenzo Lusci in 70īs, so there is enough informations for building.
There will be some modifications of mine on the ship Now I have almost the based hull completed, but Iīll put all the progress here.

I started - as obviously by frame. The frame was made from crinkly carton ( boxes from milk ) glued across till 5 mm thickness .
I glued the middledeck, and, as you can see, made the lower row of the gundeck. It isnīt on any plan, a lot of progress Iīll do by myself. . I already start to tightening of the hull / frame by many of horizontal ribs.

You amaze me, you use plain ole corrugated cardboard, I go to Hobby Lobby and buy Bristol, 3X4 matt board and yesterday Lahgton Prestige 100% cotton card stock, business card thickness.

Then using drawings proceed to assemble a frame work that is straight, true and warp free. I can only do this if using a laser cut frame!

Please know, many here watch you work your magic my friend.

Thank you, Rick

You know, Iīm quite lot ahead, so here is next progress I did.

After gluing horizontal ribs I grind the frame. Then I made the bottom part of the hull shell by 3 layers of cartoon - by the same way as I did on the Mary Rose. here is the result:

Next step - decks. For imitation of wooden deck I used foil strips (as always ) As you can see, I added lowest gun deck - it is NOT in any plans.

Next step: I created parts of sides shell and glued them on the ship. I started from the aft. Each side consist 4 parts - because of hull curves. The hull is closed

Next step - the final layer of the shel - I used 4mm strips of 0,5 mm carton. The hull is extremely strong now. Then I grinded it and impregned by uncoloured paint.
And next step - I drew gunports and cut out them. These gunports are NOT by plan, their places are based on lusciīs book and other plans and informations I have about this ship. Corel plans have improved positions because of frame construction - not as it was on the real ship. There were the same distances between gunports. I had cut out some parts of ribs.

Next step - doors and galion deck. The ship get doors . On the galion deck I put two instead of one. It takes a while to get the final decision because of tons of different information. On the model is my solution and decision.
The same perplexity was with the deck on the galion. There are gratings on each plan or model, but I am more or less sure that there they werenīt on the ship. La couronne was the first ship built by french themselves. Till these days were ship in France built by Dutch, and we have one survived ship from the same age built by Dutch - and itīs VASA, so I decided to make the deck by the same way like on the Vasa is. Thereīs no a big time distance between 1628 abd 1636
By the way, look at the side gallery on the both ships - theyīre very similar.
I also made the imitation of gratings on the middledeck / imitation because there will be the ship boats on them and there will be almost nothing to see of them. /
