04 – Bow Assemblies

Hello Friends,
These images cover some of the details around the bow I have been working on. They include the bow decoration, torpedo tube door, anchor chain openings, anchor beds, Four inch gun casemates and the 6-pounder gun casemates. Note: Golden Bear instructs most of these assemblies to be printed on card, however I find paper easier to use for most small items and so all the assemblies in these images are made of paper.
Regards,
Mike

Historical Image: Iowa entering dry dock in September of 1898. I presented this image because it gives a very good view of the bow showing all the assemblies I referred to in this report.

Really beautiful work, Mike!
The photo accents the work you've done on Carl's design, great job!

Cheers!

Thanks Don, Joe, Jim, Glen, Marco and OhioMike ...................
I appreciate the nice comments. The hull did not turn out bad, but I have learned a few more lessons that will be useful with the next one.

05 – Upper Hull and Superstructure Parts

Hello Modelers,
The first three images show the midship upper hull area, where I was able to fit the curving pieces beneath the secondary gun turret platforms. This type of work is always a challenge, but the parts fit well and things turned out okay. Also, between the two gun platforms is the midship 4-inch gun casemate. The designer instructs these parts to be printed on card, but as is my habit, I went ahead and made them all with paper. I included a close-up image of Iowa (New York Harbor August 1898) that gives a great view of the midship upper hull area to compare with the model. That completes most of the work on the upper hull. Davits and other details will be added much later in the project. I have noticed that glue spots show up quite readily with this shade of gray (as can be seen in the first image). I need to be more alert to that going forward.
Time for the superstructure. The last four images show the first elements of the superstructure. Within the lower superstructure is a pair of platforms. The brackets for the platforms are the first “delicate” work. They worked out well, and add some real detail. Again, all the parts shown are paper.

Regards,
Mike

Holy snap! Those brackets are paper?! I'd soil myself trying to get ones to look that nice. Excellent work!
