A question abiout the shape of the main turrets

Hello,

I am building the USS Iowa at the moment and I have stumbled upon some aspects I cannot sort out by myself.

Carl stated in this thread (page 2) that he designed the Iowa as she appeared in 1898. The modelīs main turrets are of an oval shape. Wheras this is certainly true for the Iowa in her final appearance

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Io...rway_c1922.jpg

I wonder whether the turrets were not of a rotund shape first. A book I own contains a drawing which shows them in such a shape and a sketch from an early design phase has rotund turrets too.

So at the moment I am hesitating to glue down the finish turrets.

Can anybody lead me to some conclusive evidence with regards to the shape of the turrets?

Kind regards

Demel

Hello Demel,

Nice to hear about your plans to build this model. Sorry I don't have any research material to help you with this question.
The drawing you show on the right does indeed show nearly perfectly round turrets. I would recommend caution in concluding the shape of the turrets based on a single drawing. The preceding Indiana class of battleships had perfectly round turrets, but the Iowa’s main turrets (as far as I know) were slightly oval. I suppose it is possible, that in the early development stage, navy designers drew round turrets. But I have not seen any photos that she was ever built with them.
Looking forward to your work, if you intend to post updates.
Regards,
Mike

It is a good time for a foreigner like me to learn how to make a classic ship. Learning historic ship will make me have broader knowledge and develop my design skill. Thank you.
