Perhaps it was the worm-hole device? Funny, I've never written Beach's book - I'll add it to the reading list, Charles.
I noticed the 'stand' has 'garbage' printed on it. Missing a Japanese font, perhaps?

Ah So: So Sorry....
RL:
Maj Davenport probably meant McDowell, who took I-400 back to Pearl after its capture..... Yes, I lack Japanese fonts; and, no, I do not care. I need SOMETHING to hold this big SOBoat up so I can work on it.... It is not done yet, OK? JR

Sen-Toku Update
Back to work yesterday! Conning tower assembly just about finished and the 40-mm AA gun mounted. Most, if not all, remaining sub-assemblies are now complete and ready for installation.
This is a nicely-done, well-fitting model, even resized. I sent a note to the designer [email protected] complimenting him on his work. My auto-translator didn't work so well, and Etsu-san does not speak English. Can one of you out there translate this into Japanese and forward it to him on my behalf? Etsu-san: Hello! I purchased your 1:400 model of I-400 from your site! It is an excellent model! I enlarged your model to 1:200 scale for my private use alone and at my own expense. I am building it here on Paper Modelers: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/ships-watercraft/17400-ijn-i-400-sen-toku-submarine-1-200-a.html It is working up into a beautiful model! Thank you for creating this! You should consider making this available in larger scale: 1:200 or even 1:100 If you wish, I can send you photographs of my upscaled version. Sincerely and with best regards, Your Canadian friend, Jim (Fishcarver)

Double-translations on Google Translate
I found that if I take a Japanese text and translate it into English, then translate THAT back into Japanese and then do it another time, the English translation is much more readable.
I don't know if a similar effect will occur when going from English into Japanese. I suppose you would need a Japanese speaking friend to give you an assessment of the results. I expect these translation tools have a more difficult time working with languages that have implied context vice explicit context. As my mechanics professor noted once (he was Chinese), "Why do you have to determine a "nurse" is a man or a woman? In Chinese, a "nurse" is always a woman - so we say, 'the nurse gave me a shot. It did a good job." I'm sure many such complexities exist to challenge anyone trying to write a good translation program. Where's "Basic" when you need it?

A Need for Esperanto?
Yo, Robert!
Thanks for this!! Hopefully, one of our forum bretheren will pass this message on to Estutan-san. This comrade designs VERY NICE models with LOTS of attention to detail. I hope that he gets better known, and sells many more models. Hopefully, he can hook up with Halinski, Modelik, etc, and issue the I-400 in larger scale: perhaps, even 1:100 !!! As you know, I rescaled the I-400 to 1:200 scale. Thus far, even at the rescale, the fit problems have been minimal, and the detail present is impressive; reflective of painstaking research. I enjoy that in a model, in whatever medium! Sincere best regards, Your Cdn friend, Jim

The Crane, Boss!! THE CRANE!!
Hi All! Another soggy day in the Temperate Rain Forest Zone of Beautiful British Columbia.....
Another sure sign of Spring: a 4" Banana Slug (*) on my deck sent my pal, "Big Al" (Alvine, Son of Erskine) running inside in terror to be with his Dad. Alvine is a 14-lb (7.0kg) neutered orange male kat, 12 years of age...... When God handed out kat brains, Alvie was hiding someplace.......I am his Dad....Ich dien. Anyhow, and "Seizing the Day", I decided to work on the Sen-Toku's hydraulically-retractable, stowable aircraft crane; at least enough to make it semi-retractable and semi-stowable. I had known that I was going to do this, going in. This required prefabrication of the crane tub and the midships former, in order to accommodate the nesting styrene/aluminum tube to make up the crane mast; and the prefabrication of a few entirely-non-prototypical paper-styrene parts . Here are some pix! MTF Jim PS * :Black Slug - Bing Images
