NGS Channel Special: "Japan's Secret Weapon".
Last evening (Sun, 16 Sept 2012) I was surprised, enlightened and entertained by a one-hour long NGS documentary on the I-400 class of submarines. Of particular interest were the interviews with the survivors, both of the IJN "SEIRAN" pilots and of the American prize crews of I-400 and I-401 . I was not aware that I-401 was also captured.... my reference indicates that I-401 was sunk at Ulithi. Of particular interest was the attention that was paid to the considerable input that Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto had in the conception and design of this class of "submarine aircraft carriers". It was sad to see these great vessels scuttled at sea, before the Russians could get mitts on them.
If you can grab this as a podcast or otherwise, it is well worth it! Regards, Jim

1:200 to 1:160 "Sen Toku"
HMCS: Should I live long enough, I'd like to rebuild "Sen Toku I-400" in 1:160 to match "SURCOUF" (200/160=126%) Then, you'll see the two largest submarines in the world, prior to the "OHIO" class missile boats and the Soviet "Typhoons", in the same scale.

Just a note - I took my USS Archerfish in 1/100 scale to FedEx/Kinkos for enlarging to 1/72 scale, and the guys there liked the project so much they made sure the color was retained like the original, and printed out the work for only 30.00, which saved my printer the headache - it's just an suggestion that might save some people some money (and two of the guys made copies for themselves to build as well).

In this case, they love me here; not only do I burst High Schooler's bubbles that such planes/ships/inventions existed, but they can see the paper model. The best one was the I-400 submarine when we did World War Two in the Pacific; the whole class bet their lunch ice creams that there was no such submarine.
Never in my life did I have so much chocolate ice cream in one day..... Cheers! Drew - the oracle7 |

Unfortunately, Jim passed away earlier this year. Rick
