Preiser also make figures that are close to, if not, 1/200 - I have some for my 1/200 Yamato; there are also some brass figure sets that you '3D' using paint; there is also a range of accessories available for ships in 1/200 that you may struggle to find in 1/160: I've already been eyeing up the various GPM 25mm for my Yamato and Kitakami models...

Simon: I used Preiser's 1:160 "Modern German Firefighters" as the crew for Surcouf: am hoping to get away with these here as well!!

The idea of using GPM brass for these 25mms is, in retrospect, a very good idea......

Exclamation So, Here we Go!!

I am fed up with ricardoing (dicking) around with tiny parts!! So, I have begun to frame up the hull.

14 x 2mm formers on a 24-inch hull. This scares me. But I have a plan in mind.

First, we join the horizontal and vertical longitudinal formers with robust 2mm joining strips. The brick-like object is, in fact, a solid 5-lb (2kg) steel block. (mini-press)

The lateral formers have been cut out as accurately as possible.(Let us pray)

Finally, using a worn-out sanding band, we grind the stem (bow) end into an acute angle (+/- 45 degrees). The portion where the grinding is taking place has been saturated with diluted Tite Bond glue and allowed to dry.

MTF

The 1:400 model has only 98 parts. I am finding that, using my reference, I am building many "mini models" within the overall context of the I-400. So Be it.

Thanks, Marco! It is a technique that I learned from studying the great Sheperd Payne: he calls it "creative gizmology" or "fake it and make it".

More will be revealed shortly....
