Today, the hull will get its first coat of paint (Acrylic liberally laced with matte varnish). While that dries, I will "lay down some track" on the upper works: 0.5 mm styrene strip on the hangar and catapult tracks. Upscaling means much more 3D..... I am so far enjoying this project.... MTF Jim

Intentionally "NOT" for several reasons. Number one is the cost, it's not nearly as cheap as the styrofoam packing that protects commercial products in the box, i.e. home computers. That stuff is free for the taking. Number two is that it expands which can deform delicate paper components. Next, one has to wait for the expanding foam to cure; with styrofoam, you just glue it into place with Tacky glue and sand to shape. Finally, the spray foam insulation has a limited shelf life which means you use all of it at once or loose the rest in the can. I've quite a bit of experience with 2-part expanding urethane foam insulation and the spray can type. I use it in other forms of modeling but not paper.

On Our Way to Hull
The hull hath received two thin coats of paint....
If further fillin' and grinding is necessary, then it will happen. The method that I use is " Strengthen the Substrate" Always!! Dilute glue..Varnish..paint. And work Slowly!! Jim

Hello my Canadian Friend
I watching your works with the hull; haven't you thought about filling the spaces between each part of the skeleton with car plaster? Or you could glue another skin of the hull on the existing one, but you would have to strengthen the first layer with e.g. super glue. Do you use PVA glue for hull? If you do, I do not recommend it. It's based on water, the smallest touch will result in deformations when it's not dry. Best glue for this job would be Polish glue Butapren - English replacement's called Contact Adhesive. I hope it helps I really like what you do because you put loats of time heart into it. Best regards, Adam |

I believe he is referring to auto body filler, commonly called "Bondo" in the U.S. That would be a disastrous choice BTW. At this point, you are pretty much locked in to your construction choice, Jim. The only other viable alternative would be to insert styrofoam plugs to move the skins into place, but that would mean a considerable investment in time.

The hull So Far:
The hull has been filled, sanded , re-varnished , and given a blending coat of paint. If some further filling/sanding etc is necesssary, then so be it. We are getting "close enough for late-war Imperial Japanese Government work"....
