Adam: What you folks do not see is the building up of the little detail parts: guns, periscopes, hatch covers, etc that has been going on behind the scenes. Also, your KURSK is 2x the size of this I-400.... I wish I had space to display a 1:100 KURSK....
Thanks for your support and your friendship!
Jim

The hull gets skinned tomorrow...maybe...

Lookin' good there Jim.

Gotta luv all those itty bitty bits and pieces, especially as many as you get to stuff on this submarine.

Skinning out the hull Part 1

The process of skinning out the hull now begins. As I have opted to open the anchor receptacles and the bow plane doors, some prep work was required.

To prevent "fit problems, I have made a few "modifications" to the basic set up...

Hull's Law..Part 1

Actually, it's really HOWE'S Law: "Every man has a scheme that will not work." Roberts' Corollary to Howe's Law states simply: "You got that part right, driver!!" Stanley Boyne's appendum to Roberts' Corollary:READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!!

My homebrew "improvement" on Etsu-san's design did not work out so hot. So I decided to go back to basics and follow the instructions/design..

I did, however, glue in lengthwise strakes (a la Surcouf) to support the hull panels. These were just plain paper, "juiced" with Preserve It, (laugh now Treadhead) and painted with a basic Hull Red.

WELL, Big pleasant surprise! If any of you out there happen to know Etsu-san, give him a big High Five from me.....He has some very interesting ideas, especially as he designed this BBS in 1:400. (BBS=Big Bustard Submarine)

This model incorporates hull plates with a flangible (foldable) adjustable fore-aft joining strip. You will see this in the pics. The secret to their installation is to glue them sequentially along the centre line of the keel first, and let them dry overnight. Then, start gluing each section (one side at a time) to the midships deck.

If you load glue into a brush, working carefully, you can reach right down along the formers and thereby form a reasonable hull, avoiding the worst of the dreaded "bamboo effect".

So far my I-400 has escaped the worst of the "bamboo effect". Although she has had a couple of trips outside today for "filling and sanding"....

I got the ballast keels installed today as well.....

Too bad I did not catch your thread soon enough. The preeminent method to prevent the bamboo effect is to fill the spaces between bulkheads with sytrofoam and sand it to the final shape.

This also negates the need for joining strips of any kind and gives you a solid surface against which you can glue hull plates bereft of seam lines. Here's my thread on how to do it.

Maj. Charles:
Thanks for the tip! I'll use it on the next project!!

BTW: Have you ever tried using the "minimally-expanding spray insulation foam" ??

Hi Jim,

Looks like you are working right along on this one.

I would never laugh at your efforts...I might snicker occasionally

Preserve It is some great stuff, not only helps stabilize ink jet colors but adds some strength and flexibility to the paper/card sheets.
