I use 1/32" and 1/16" plywood to replace former stock. Cuts easy with a pair of sissors. Costs more than cardboard but works very well.

It is good to read about so many people appreciating balsa and foam. The idea of using very thin plywood was new to me, and struck me as very useful. In so far as you can get hold of wider sheets than the standard 4" / 100mm balsa sheets, it would solve some problems. Thank you. - L.

This is an INCREDIBLY interesting and useful post! It is amazing what happens when we start to "think outside of the box"!!

Hi there!
I made a whole paper model out of balsa. You can see the result here. I just replaced the parts with balsa wood of different thickness: 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm and 4mm. Easy to cut with a sharp knife/scalpel in grain direction, not so pleasant to cut across the grain. But all together I was very satisfied and it was a lot of Fun to make a paper model out of "new material"... In my recent build I use balsa from time to time for various purposes, for instance this one. In my opinion it is a useful material for paper modelers if you do not want to build a "strictly-paper-only-model"... Rgds, Radek

I started using bass wood. I use a spray varnish to help stabilize the grains and then cut away. I used this to do dave's snow white B-24 wing. Its coming along great.
