2mm formers out of balsa?

Does anyone have any experience in using balsa for 2mm formers?

The thought of trying to cut 2mm card for the frame of my next project is making my hands hurt already!

Thanks,
Russ

I wonder why more people don't use wood and balsa.

I've heard mention of it being done, but don't remember any specific examples. It seems like a great idea and I see no reason it couldn't/shouldn't be done. It's a perfect material for the application.

Do it all the time. Very easy. Use super glue thin to strengthen small detailed areas as it splits and breaks fairly easy. Try it you'll like it.

Tim,

What didn't work for you...gluing, cutting? I saw an old post that Redhorse used it on a Japanese carrier and trouble with a specific adhesive.

I think I'll make a couple of copies of the frames and try on them, before I try on "the real thing".

I found the balsa kept breaking along the grain. Eventually gave up and went back to cardboard - Still made a pigs ear of the kit

Thanks Tim!

That was actually my concern. I am going to try it on some copies.

Thanks again for the input!

A grainless alternative to balsa may be the varying thicknesses of foam board that are available - easier to cut than card of the same thickness but without the grainy issues of some woods...

Eh, I do, Zathros, especially with aircraft in scale 1:50 or ships in scale 1:200. I use a combination of balsa formers, cardboard formers and wooden strip longerons, see photo's
