Paper Shipwright Thames Lighter Tug Samson

A quick Christmas build. Since I never seem to finish anything large anymore so I thought I'd best show and tell before I move on to another project which might never see the light of publicity.

A great little 1:250 scale kit, and I do mean little, 77mm or 3 inches long. Very precise and very detailed. I just got some new reading glasses and remain impressed by David Hathaway's products.

These small small tugs were employed moving lighters (is that the same as dumb lighters) around the old Pool of London, docks and other destinations on the Thames.

The kit contains two steam tugs, Samson and King Tut, both of which were sold out of military service after The Great War. I presume both mast and funnel folded to clear low bridges as they busied about tasks in the great metropolis. Perhaps the grey discs and rods amidships the funnel were associated with this? Smoke is thin acetate daubed with PVA paint mix.

I have a lighter building and will provide a crew of two or three but in the meantime please welcome Samson.

Finally while still building for a sense of scale:

Excellent! Now that I have built David Hathaway's little workboat, the little tugs and barges are high on my list.
