SS Zuiderkruis
I got this model from Lighthouse when they were still around. I picked this one 'cause my Mom's family emigrated from Holland to Canada on this ship and came right through Peir 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, although the journey ended in Edmonton. I now live in Nova Scotia and Peir 21 is a heritage site for many of Canada's immigrants from days gone by. This seemed like a fitting model for my collection.

I wanted to open the portholes in the ship. I found that a printer ink re-fill syringe did the job quite nicely. A few twists and the hole was open, however I needed to clear the tube after each removal. By keeping the plunger extended I was able the press it and 'blow' the removed porthole from the syringe on most occasions.

The hull skeleton was formed. I inserted a longstrip of wood into the triangular 'keel' to reduce the ship from hogging or sagging after applying the hull plating as a result from glue drying. I have had this happen before so this is just a precautionary move.

I applied some blasa stiffening members in the hull at the location where the hull plates are expected to join. I did this because I figured that I may get some warpage here once I join them and if it was reinforced, I could apply a little more pressure to ensure a tight bond between the parts.

That seemed like such a good idea I extended it several more bays forward and aft. This way I can safely handle the model when building without overflexing the hull sides and revealing all the frames behind it.
The main deck was also applied and the balsa hull stiffeners did well to help out on the deck here. Also the fore and aft decks were appiled with additional card stiffeners located below each (still visible on the Fore deck). |

Good luck! Always nice to build something with a family connection.

Good luck with your Zuiderkruis.
It is fun watching a new project and some new techniques. The syringe for the portholes is quite clever. Mike |

Here we can see the portholes and scuppers opened up. The Gray line visible between the scuppers, and above the port holes represents the level of the main deck. Images of the real ship show this as open so I am contemplating on doing this too, however it will make the bulwark loose and flexible.

The hull is longer than it needs to be and the extra is identifed on the part. I like that.
