Thank you Mike, I appreciate your support and encouragement (since it takes quite a while for me to make progress, looking back is easier to see but while working along on one stage the ship changes slowly)

Hi David thanks again Update on this one is mostly trying to scale the masts
as the basis for the rigging later. There is a list of mast lengths on the plan given in Chapelle's book "Search for Speed Under Sail" which is the hull plan I used for this model, but I was not sure where these numbers came from and if accurate in all respects, and if they are, the length of the masthead for each mast and therefore the overall length of the mast is not given. However Charles Davis has come to the rescue with "The Ship Model Builder's Assistant" he answers these questions with a number of rules that clarify these things nicely, and will get me "shipshape"... He reports the general mistake is to make the model masts too long, and my initial attempts were just so..I didn't think it looked right anyway, and could not make the numbers in Chapelle's list work..even though I double checked my math with a 1/96 ruler that I made working on prior ships..my error was the depth difference of the hull. The mast lengths are given to the "step" of the mast down near the keel of the ship, the exact depth of this was unsure of. It seems to me Chapelle's numbers look pretty good now with using Davis's builder's rules, which he states were used by the designers of the original ships, which to me is really cool. He goes on to explain the reason for changes that were made over time (he states prior to or after 1800)...now the masts look more shipshape although there is still some work to improve them a little as may be a few scale feet off in a couple places. Sorry for the long-winded discussion and for the fact that the masts are obviously not paper, although the tops and caps are.

You have a masterpiece going here Glen.
It has that look with those masts in place, and the rigging on the bowsprit.

Thank you Marco and Mike for the very kind words, I regret to leave the card part as so much coming up is wood and string...the masts are in temporarily to get them about right then can finish deck parts

It is a very trim ship, Glenn.

Thanks for the additional information. As a CHapelle fan,. I am glad to see the references to his work.

Nice chipmunk (neotomias?).

Great looking ship, Glen!
So glad you found the answer to the question on mast lengths, it's easy to forget the masts go down to the mast steps when considering the lengths above the weather deck, but you obviously figured it out and she looks fantastic.

I look forward to your further updates as you begin to rig this beauty! As always, a treat to see your work!

Cheers!
Jim

Thanks Don and Jim, nice to hear from you, Don the species of Chipmunk I'm not sure our little westen chipmunks are much smaller than their Eastern cousins, but same cute habits...
Jim I had some trouble with roughing out the masts but is an enjoyable part of the build, as all the parts come nicely apart with the fid stopping the topmast in just the right spot, quite fun
had some ice on the road today, and some of the other cars had snow on them...brr
