Hello Bengt,
I hope you will share images of the work with us.
It is always a pleasure to watch David Hathaway's ships being built.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one come together. A very interesting ship to be sure.

SS Nomadic from Paper Shipwright

Indeed it is, Jeff!

I did some preparatory double scoring and folding of a lot of the parts today, as well as reading the very clear, detailed and informative instructions in full. Very important to follow it to the letter to avoid silly chronological mistakes.

There are a number of things to do before the actual assembly, like punching port and mast holes in the correct diameters, cutting out windows, making tiny needle holes for the railings, mast ladders, rigging, etc etc. I am also planning to fold some thin brown paper strips for all the stairs running up and down the decks.

I think I will also make the effort of going to a ship modeling specialist shop here in Stockholm, to get a short length of tiny black 1:200 scale anchor chain. I'll even have a look at some bollards and see if I can find a tiny ship's bell (in brass or cold color). Those small details that are so delicate to cut properly in paper might enhance the model as a whole.

I am thinking this model could be a first step in a Cherbourg seaside diorama, which could include the upcoming SZKUTNIK 1:200 scale Titanic (modified then as a waterline model!) next year, if done with great care now.

All the best,
Bengt

Cherbourg SS Nomadic - RMS Titanic Diorama

I began looking for art work related to a Cherbourg evening or night scene, with both the SS Nomadic tender and the RMS Titanic, and there are plenty around as inspiration for a future model diorama (I couldn't find the artist's names for the last three):

1. The Nomadic going out from Cherbourg with 1st and 2nd class passengers and mail to meet the Titanic on her maiden voyage (fantastic art work by Emil Besireviç in 2008):

2. Nearing the great ship on her first port call:

3. Allowing the passengers to embark for the voyage (and some very fortunate ones to disembark!):

4. Returning to Cherbourg -this scene should probably have been considerably darker, as the Titanic was already delayed, due to a near-collision with the liner SS New York, just after setting out from Southampton earlier that day, the 10th of April, 1912:

LED Lighting

Hi all,

One thing that readily springs to mind when looking at these scenes is that some kind of internal lighting in the models would be interesting:

There are of course many different approaches to this, but the best seems to be the small warm (Tungsten-looking) LED lights that nowadays are available to modelers: Model Trains LEDs for AC DCC DC

I don't know at this stage if I am ready for such a commitment, but it would certainly add some flavor.

All the best,
Bengt

PS.
In the art work above, you can spot the enclosed wheelhouse on the SS Nomadic, which in fact wasn't in place yet, when she met the RMS Titanic.

Hello Bengt:
One of the interesting features of the Titanic are all the portholes (lit up) along the sides of the hull. Internal lighting in your model would be impressive. I have not seen a posting from Doris for a while, but if you are familiar with her work on this forum, you may remember the lovely internal lighting she uses on her old sailing ships.

Internal Lighting with Small LEDs

Oh, yes, Mike,

Doris is a major inspiration and a role model with redards to card modeling (and scratch building) of the highest order, if there ever was one.
(Possibly also Joseph Fuchs of Vienna, Eric Goedkoop, Gil, Leif Ohlsson, and a few others of the true card model masters...)
I have seen most of her amazing posts and photos and I remember her minute internal lighting as well. Absolutely incredible work.

I am actually considering internal lighting, but that requires an incredible lot of tedious work on the inside, neatly dressing up all the interiors with alumnium foil or similar tape, leaving absolutely no leaks, to prevent any light spill through the white paper. Similarly, a coat of black paint (water color or acryllic) has to be finely applied around every port hole and window, for the same reasons. Phew!

However, I saw some very fine work on a plastic Minicraft 1:350 scale Titanic model over at the TRMA forum, being built by Bob Wescott, that inspired me: TITANIC FORUM - Bob's 1/350 Minicraft Titanic

Some Scoring

Thanks, Jerry,

those are kind words from a Titanic specialist such as yourself. I liked what you did with your Taschen Titanic model (the diorama with your own tugs)!
What did you use for water? Is it some kind of glossy plastic sheet? It looks great.

This evening I went on to do some scoring of the hull parts, along the blue lines, where there hull bends rather sharply down towards the water. I also shaped the access doors, that are recessed into the upper hull. I further cut a thin cardboard backing for the long standing reinforcement piece, which I am testing here - I think it is sturdy enough, if I want better alignment or have issues with that later I can always add thin strips of balsa on both sides. It can appear in this photo, by the way, that the windows are cut out, but they are not at this stage - I haven't yet decided if I should do it ot not:

A little later (efter dinner), I cut a piece of thin cardboard that I might use under the completed model if it needs strengthening, however, I think I can do without it. (I present the two photos here in b&w, because I got so fed up trying correct the crappy colors I get under the lamp with the new camera when the daylight is gone):

I then scored the outer hull lines of the base (from the back side, using a small light table and the curved ruler in front) and folded them up all around. A dry fit with the hull pieces looked very nice, so the next obvious step, after this photo, will be to glue the peices together (using the perfectly flat and straight marble board) and start on all the dividing bulkheads to form the actual hull - in a day or two...

All the best,
Bengt
