Hey Jim.... Good progress. Looks great.
That mystery part is USN floater net baskets of the WWII period... See here in this photo (on the right of the catwalk)

You are undoubtedly correct eibwarrier. Thanks for the reply. I had not heard about floater nets.
The 1:350 photo etch items might not look too bad on the 1:300 Essex. regards Jim |

hi all. Just a little progress on the Essex.
Unfortunately I only get to work on the model about 2-3 days out of two weeks due to travel. The deck edge and platforms at the port side forward and starboard side aft. regards Jim Bean |

Good catwalks Jim. Just what those 20mm galleries need for support and protection.
This may be an older kit, but you're turning her into a great model. Looks very good.

hi all,
Just a little bit more. Some life rafts and floater net baskets under the port bow and the starboard bow catwalks. The rest of the catwalks at the starboard stern. Jim |

Nice work Jim.... Lots of details and work to do around the catwalk galleries. Good looking rafts.
Looks ready for all those 20 mm guns. Get the production line ready.

That's the scary part of this model, it has SO many guns.
And each one is a model in itself. I hope I have the stamina to finish it !!! Jim |

Part 29
I'm no expert on this, but those kind of resemble the life rafts we had on the actual USS Essex. Basically a big rounded rectangle (sorry Apple) of flotation material, with a net in the middle. You just sat on the net, with your butt and about half your body in the water.
The advantage of them was that they were easily launched, easy to get into from the water, and if the ship sank they would simply float away from the side of the ship and be available to swimmers in the water. Personally, I always hoped that we stayed away from the North Atlantic. And that the rescue ships showed up quickly. |

A little more progress. The port side catwalks the cranes and the two boats.
The items that look like horizontal ladders are, I think, actually horizontal ladders. It looks like they could pivot and be lowered to sea level to connect to an alongside boat. Most of the rafts are in place. There are two left which are either extras or I haven't fingered out where they go yet. Many of the floater net baskets left to go (part 29) and all of the guns. JIm |
