hi all,
After a long delay a little progress. I have started the JAHRE Viking and neglected this model. Just the 5 inch (127 mm) gun turrets and a quad 40mm mount. Remaining is the island, a bunch more 40mm's and a bunch of floater net baskets. I am not bothering with barrels as 1:300 is not a popular scale and they are probably not available. regards Jim Bean |

Just a little more progress. The 40 mm mounts are on. There are 9 of them at the bow, stern, two on starboard and five to port. On to the island Jim

After a long delay, some progress on the island structure of the Essex. The mast is solid copper wire with the insulation skinned off.
I drilled through the deck piece into the wood to make a template for the bottom of the mast and to also be a jig to hold it for soldering. Also the support pieces under the platforms are in place. and the funnel finished. Remaining is the top of the mast and two 40 mm gun positions. cheers Jim |

hello all,
A little more progress on the Essex. The mast top and the 5 lower-able radio antennas. Almost finished. The fire directors should have antennas on top, which I think are for height finding. Also the 5 inch guns should have barrels. cheers Jim |

I have this kit in my pile of kits I will never get around to building. I'm enjoying seeing yours come together.

As for barrels try gpm.pl website. they do have some for 1/300 scale. You could always use 1/250 scale or 1/350 scale which is popular for our large scale plastics friends. the smaller 5" and 40 mm are not that far off to be effective at 1/300. otherwise great work!

Thank you friends. It is a fun kit to build, rather dated now and I think not too available.
I had to buy it on either EBAY or Amazon, I forget. I visit the GPM site often but never thought to check if barrels were available in 1:300. It seems an unpopular scale. I was undecided about putting on barrels but now I am motivated. cheers Jim Bean |
