Thanks for all the replies, guys! This discussion is really insightful and is opening my eyes to other points of view. I wouldn't feel right using someone else's opinion to form my own on something like this, but having differing points of view helps me to get the feel I want out of my models.

BTW - If you want to get the washboard effect "naturally," just use normal Elmers Glue and live in or near Houston, Texas. The local humidity will do it for you. I found that out the hard way with my model of the USS Jacard. I ended up changing to a better glue.
