RN La Masa & Achille Papa

The "Tre Pipe" (Three Pipers) were a long series of different destroyer classes built by the Pattison shipyard (Impavido, Sirtori, La Masa and Generali classes) since 1913, dubbed like that because of their three funnels. These 35 strong class destroyers fought during WWI and most of them survived to fight in WWII, even if they were downgraded to Torpedoboat in 1929. Being obsolete during WWII, they were relegated to escort duties... achieving very little. The only success came from the Achille Papa that, the 30 July 1941, rammed and sunk the Hms Cachalot.

So here there two models. The dark one is the destroyer "La Masa" in its 20's colour, the second one is the Achille Papa in 1942 camouflage.

I build them making a crossover of Answer Insidioso and Zio Prudenzio Prestinari, plus many modification (for istance, the hull and the main bridge).

Very good kitbash, Emmanuele. There are few kits of the smaller than cruiser Italian warships.

Thanks,

It's good that someone is interested in the Italian navy!

These are the main bridges with their charateristic frame. Behind the windows then, I put some acetate.

Very nice looking - and I agree totally, there are very few smaller-than-cruiser ships from any country save USA, the Commonwealth, USSR and Poland (that I know of). There were quite a few interesting ship classes that are under-represented - like Danube gunboats of the second half of the 19th century, for example.

I'm glad to see these Italian three-stack destroyers under construction.

New work,

New classes, new troublesome kids to teach... so little time to work on my models.

After nearly two weeks of work, I just finished the 102mm guns.
