Titanic Lookout Station
I am building a Fly Titanic and am wondering how the lookouts got into thier station on the formast. I have not seen any ladders or ratlines going to that level in any of the drawings or reference material that I've looked at so far. Can anyone out there enlighten me?

Dear Rgmarine:
There was/is a ladder inside the mast!!! so there should be shown a hatch inside the tub facing the bow(I think). Jerry will probily have a picture of it. Got to remember that things were big on that ship even if they look small on the model. Happy to help, MILES |

Thanks Miles, I thought it might be the case but couldn't find any confirmation.

The hatch was in the mast itself. They climbed the ladder inside the mast then out onto the watch station. I don't believe there was even a hatch door on it, just an opening. Not sure though

There was indeed a ladder inside Titanic's foremast. I believe the mast could be entered in the crews passage under the forecastle. There is a hatch facing the bow as Miles mentioned. It can still be seen on the wreck today:
Image removed by request, and this allows the thread to be accessed with out errors The crowsnest has fallen away and has probably dropped into one of the cargoholds below. It is believed that to the line, seen coming from within the mast, a portable telephone could be plugged to stay in contact with the bridge. Attachment of new image by request. Jerry

The crows nest did not fell by itself. One of the treasure hunters who visited the wreck tried to remove it but they failed, thank God.

By the way, I'm involved in starting to make the Schreiber Titanic in 1/200 scale. It is by far the best Titanic paper model EVER MADE. Not cheap, but worth every penny!!. And it can be powered with electric motors and steered with radio control.

Dear Jerry V:
Great picture you found I guessed that you would come through on this question. Now are any of the titanic models Detailed enough to blowup the section of mast and platform to 1/32 scale to superdetail and add lead sailor figures? I think it would make a good diaroma. Thanks, MILES Hint Hint I would be in line to be a beta builder By the way RGMarine thanks for asking the question, I have started to make ralph C's model severial times, been collecting books on the titanic for years never thought that an oversized diarama of the crowsnest before. Thanks, MSL |

Miles, I believe some of the larger models are best to enlarge the mast and crow's nest. I wanted to include crew and passengers onto my 1:200 scale Taschen Titanic papermodel, but the best ones I could find were Edwardian passengers in 1:350 scale used for model kits. These were out of scale in this model
So I decided not to include the passengers. As some may know I am a Titanic collector and modelers myself, and have build several models of the Titanic and her wreck. Jerry
