Russ -
I am catching up with your build after an absence from the forum. Let me add my voice to the chorus of praise. You are doing justice to Swayback Maru. I also notice your model of Glowworm in the background. Last week, on my way to the Military History Institute reading room, I stopped by the used book sale shelves and picked up a copy of Donald Macintyre's The Naval War Against Hitler, which contains an account of the battle between Glowworm and Hipper. Main mast & fire control radar...
Work progresses slowly. I completed the forward fire control radar and the more of the tripod mast. One of the pictures shows the first of the quad 40mm AA guns. I also built the rest of the structures on the main deck (for no other reason than to hide the big white spots on the deck where they go!!).
I bought some beading wire at Walmart the other day. As is it wasn't too useful, but once I took a match to it and burned off the plastic sheath I can see a lot of uses for it. Without the plastic sheath it can be bent and it will hold an angle. I'm going to use it for the gun sights and the foot petals on the AA guns. The last picture is Salt Lake City taken on March 26, 1943 during the Battle of the Komandorski Islands. Of note is the position of her main guns, the aft guns are facing aft, but so are the forward guns. She spent more than her share of the battle "on the run" and most of her firing was done with her after guns. She was a very lucky ship that day!! John Lorelli's book "The Battle of the Komandorski Islands" is worth a read russ...

USS Salt Lake City's final deck log entry for 26 March 1943
"This day the hand of Divine Providence lay over the ship. Never before in her colorful history has Death been so close for so long a time. The entire crew offered it thanks to Almighty God for His mercy and protection."

Forward stack...
I've started on the forward stack. There is an error in the design of the formers. Former "F7" is too narrow. Also the instructions call for all the formers to be made from 0.5mm card. My experience on SLC says that 0.5mm is too flimsy and I've been using 1.0mm.
I've also included a picture of the mainmast (it seems like I will never be finished with that!) and starboard QUAD 40mm AA mount. Go ships!

This is absolutely superb work, Russ!
I find your treatment of the fire director and radar and surrounding structure to be particularly impressive, but all of your work on this ship is exceptionally precise. Thanks for the excerpt from the Salt Lake City log and the dramatic image of the ship during the Komandorskis battle. Don |
