You know it would not be that hard to build again, but in wood this time?

Skuldelev 3 Ship Model

Beautiful Viking lines there, Thorsten!

Have you mounted the bulkheads inside the hull? Let's see some more photos of this beauty.

All the best,
Bengt in Stockholm

Thanks all!

Bengt: Yes, the lower portions of the bulkheads are glued into place and everything is sanded and primed. The next will be to rescribe some lost detail at the bow and stern, to sand a little bit more and then to paint the hull.

Sorry for the lack of updates and pictures, I will post as soon as possible!

I'm also thinking about how to add the nails on the plans, any ideas? It should be inexpensive, don't want to buy any kind of resin heads or micro nails for this...

Best regards,
Thorsten

Maybe small dabs of PVA glue applied with a sharp tip of a toothpick. You can dye the glue black.

Nice model coming along. Best regards,

Tappi

Re. Nails

Hi Thorsten,

Perhaps you could find some hints here: Vikingeskibsmuseet Roskilde: Boatyard

Looking at the photos of Skuldelev 3 on the first page of this thread, it seems that there is a system of hand-driven nails and square locking washers.
I have an idea; if it would work in this very small scale. If you could cut out very, very small square washers out of card or paper, and then add/glue the very tip of a cut wooden tooth pick, do you think that might give the illusion of a nail? Painted dark brown or black, of course, and you would probably have to work under a strong magnifying glass...

All the best,
Bengt

Bengt, thanks! I didn't look at the nails so closely to see that the heads or washers look almost square. Not to do it too complicated, I will just glue on tiny squares; adding an even tinier detail would be overengeneering I think. Great idea!

Thanks again!
Thorsten

Skuldelev 3 Model

Glad you liked the idea, Thorsten!

Perhaps you could use a small tweezer to get them in place when you glue them on. And I suppose cutting them from dark brown or black paper to begin with would even further speed up the whole process...

All the best,
Bengt
