USS Champion

Another piece of the Ertz armada... the USS Champion, tinclad,...river steamer and 115 feet long sidewheeler. This boat is different from the typical ironclad and adds some variety to the civil war models.

Photo 1 is the beginning of the hull with deck and the casement.

Photo 2 shows the cabin work for the top of the casement and the hull sides before having their final cut...very, very thin amidships.

Photo 3 has the cabin pieces added to the piece that will cover the casement.

Great little ship this. One of my favourites. The tinclads have a really nice look to them.

Thanks Corey and Sporticus.

An update ...photo 1 shows the deckwork and pieces of the funnel between decks.

Next were the stairs which appeared to be an origami nightmare. No matter what I did, I could not see the necessary folds to make things work so I went off on my own. I built up some card to the appropriate thickness, notched out the treads and risers, painted then added wire newels and thread for the hand rail.

Photo 2 is the result and Photo 3 shows it mounted to the boat.

Ha! I remember making those stairs. This was the first kit of Corey's I made and I took ages trying to work out those stairs! Definitely my favourite kit so far.

hmmm. been a long time since I started this build which was challenging although I've been doing some other models as well, hence the delay, and haven't quit paper modeling.

Finally finished the Champion and thought I'd complete this thread with a few pics of the progression to the final product. As always, I took a little latitude but trust it doesn't hurt the build.
