IJN Shokaku 1/200
I just completed a recent move into a new home and some of my projects did not far well in the move.
So, I have been wanting to build a card ship for awhile and spent the last few days trying to figure out what I wanted to build. There are many great threads going @ the present time, but I wanted to try to go beyond my comfort zone, take on a project that allowed ample size and yet complex enough to learn from. So with that said, this being December and my love of INJ vessels, the choice was easy. IJN Shokaku, GPM #159. I will first continue w/research and acquire some more card and balsa for the building of the ships frame work. I purchased this kit a couple years ago, and I have always liked the lines of this vessel, the kit is a 1999 print and as much as I would like to repaint the hull, I am going to try and stay with just edge color and go w/the printed version. This also is a large ship once built, will display in my study on the wall, wife is happy about that!

A little history:
IJN Shokaku (Flying Crane).........cool. Sister Ship: Zuikaku (Lucky Crane)........cool as well. Laid down> December 12th 1937 @ Yokosuka Navy Yard Displacement> 25,675 tons Designed Speed> 34.2 knots Carried> 16 Five inch guns in twin mounts Could carry up to 84 aircraft, normal complement was 73 The Shokaku participated in Japan's early war time offensives, including the attack on Pearl Harbor. On the 19th of June 1944, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Shokaku was sunk by the US submarine Cavalla (SS-244). Thus ended this great IJN Carriers career.

Thanks everyone for checking in. I spent the day studying what plans/drawings there are for construction. I also checked and marked what was to be laminated to 1mm card and 1/16th balsa f/2mm laminations. I read every thread past and up to today, in reguards to IJN Carriers as posted here, learned a great deal and some areas to watch out for.
I am @ the moment studying closely and finding all the pieces to the conning tower............I know, the frame 1st! Rick

Just finished w/more research on this vessel. I was most impressed with the crew who pretty much stood and fought to their last breath, many burned alive before abandoning the ship, well over 85% of the crew went to the bottom w/the ship.
