@ Andrew
rolling smaller sized tubes from card is a fifty-fifty thing for me as well. @ Mike, Marco & Papercut thanks for the compliments Due to some distraction by the World of Tanks online-game the progress on the sub is minimal only. Nevertheless i finished the aft diving planes and the propellers. The diving planes were made the same way as the rudder with a double layer of card laminated inbetween the printed parts. According to the instruction the bow planes should be next. They are ready so far (just a piece of doubled card) but i think i´ll postpone them for a while and start with the conning tower instead. Till then RUN SILENT - RUN DEEP Rgds Peter |

Hello Peter,
Nice job making those articulating bow planes and rudder. Looking forward to more. Mike |

Hi Peter,
Really exceptional work on a very complex stern. Greg |

Thanks, Mike and Greg.
Next item in line is the sub´s conning tower. The S class had a distinctive tower design much alike the later german type VIIC U-Boats. I built the tower segments separetely as suggested in the instruction by Bartholomew. First segment is the lower part. The framework of 1mm cardboard for this small structure is a bit exaggerted in my opinion (you can park a tank on it ) but it makes the part rock solid. I had to do some sanding on the sharp end because i couldn´t "persuade" the ends of the shell part to come together ... but the resistance was short |

The base segment of the tower is glued to the hull already. By doing so, i could avoid any gaps or deformation between hull and tower base. It is also much easier to apply slight pressure until the glue is dry.
The upper segment of the conning tower is now the actual bridge itself, including the periscopes. So far the assembling did went smoothly. Only these tiny paperstrips, running around the tower, were a bit tiddly-fiddly. The periscopes are made of card and steel wire since i do not have cannulas as suggested in the instruction. For the card part i used the now spare hull sides of the USS version and made rolls around a 0,7mm steel wire. The diameter meets the final size of 1mm as per template. Compass stand, hatch and that little cylinder behind the periscopes are original parts from the kit. I added 2 small gratings inside the bulkhead for the lookouts and two indicators on the bulkhead front. I assume that these might be the engine order repeater and/or rudder angle indicator (as far as i remember my Silent Hunter time) |

In the meantime i added some remaining details to the hull:
- exit hatches on fore and aft - marker buoys on fore and aft - a tiny capstan on the fore deck - the normal anchor on the starboard bow - the submerged anchor on the forward keel - some kind of housing or cover for the forward diving planes I inserted the wire pin for the bow planes already. Anyhow, i´m not sure if the suggested way of mounting the bow planes is correct. I´ve checked the available photos and images in the WWW but none of them show the bow planes swung out. Based on the General Plan of the sister boat S-26 (from the HNSA.org website) i assume that the planes were retracted into the hull when on the surface and underway and swung out when preparing to dive. A respective section view of the GA plan shows also that the port side plane sat higher than its counterpart on starboard, thus the planes where resting on top of each other when swung in. Maybe i´ll change the bow planes accordingly. |

Hallo Peter,
Your work is always straight and clean. Its a pleasure to see one of the "older" submarines being built. Mike |

Hi Peter,
Beautifull work. As Mike already said, the assemblies looks very clean. Ciao Andrew |
