Ship railings & ladders...

This is possibly in the wrong forum, but nothing else seemed to apply...

It appears that my favorite laser railing supplier AvantCard is no longer making railings. So I was looking at Kartonmodellshop.de as a new source. The description in German of what I think are railings is: "Handlauf + zwei Durchzüge". The google translation didn't make much sense. Could someone provide a translation for me?

Thanks,
russ...

Ship railings & ladders...

Handrail + two pass throughs (ie. a 3 bar railing). If this is for SLC you will want plenty of 4 bar as well.

regards,
jeff c

The items you mentioned are indeed railings.

Handlauf means hand rail (the uppermost bar)
Durchzug / Durchzüge are the horizontal bars beneath the hand rail

In your example the description Handlauf + zwei Durchzüge means a railing with hand rail + 2 bars.
Usually this count does not include the glue stripe.

Has anyone here tried etching their own rails? I have looked into the process and it looks like an expensive process.

Yes, I etch them all the time. Costs maybe $80-$100 to get going. Then it is just the cost of brass sheet and liquids. Gives a lot of flexibility.

Golden Bear, have you thought of offering your services to those of us who can't make the investment?

I haven't had much success working with etched brass. I like the laser cut paper railings.

Are there any toxins remaining in the fluids that you have to properly dispose of?

I too actually prefer etched brass, but it is a bit expensive to buy.

Unfortunately it is not a process that would be cost effective enough for anybody to want to pay for what I would have to charge.

Russ - I felt that way for quite a while, but having finally gotten used to brass, I like its workability much more. Plus, I can position the stanchions so that they are at corners or wherever I see them in actual photos.

Paperfan - Yes there are small amounts of toxins that get rinsed off the etched parts. Over time the etchant wears out and then needs to be taken to a waste disposal center for appropriate handling.
