Curious about CSS Arkansas
Are there any paper models of the CSS Arkansas? Seems that this boat is one of the very few that had some battle success against Porter's squad before it was burned to prevent capture.

The original concept version is available at Ecardmodels.
1/250 CSN Concept Ironclad Paper Model I built the Beta version and don't remember any issues with it. Greg

I was working on one, here's the thread: CSS Arkansas. Never finished it due to life crisis.

I truly understand the cost of "living". Is there any chance of your continuing the development of the Arkansas? Having re-read the postings several times I think not finishing this one will be a great loss.....I hope this does not sound selfish, but this should attract builders like 'bees to honey".

I started work on a history of the CSS Arkasas years ago, and have a half-finished wooden model still sitting on my shelf. Her short career made her a truly remarkable vessel - more than worth modeling. I've often wondered if there was a good scale model available in paper. DanS

The problem for me is the information. Too much but not enough. Like the CSS Manassas. I can make a model of her, but no matter what it will be somewhat right (but mostly wrong). On subjects with little info, or ships never built, I have a free hand. On ships with pictoral evidence and good original plans with documentation of what was changed, a guy can really go for detail accuracy. But on some ships, their is that area were their is conflicting details.
Just my thoughts as a designer, Doesn't mean I will never do it, but... CT

Arkansas
Many years ago - in the 1970s - I obtained detailed "as built" plans for CSS Arkansas. There are two large sheets of plans, 1/4" = 1 ft, showing details of inboard/outboard profles, half-breadths, cross sections, body plan, gun deck details, and even detail of how the interlocked RR iron armor plating was attached (vertically). The plans were drawn by W. E. Geoghegan in 1964. These came from the Smithsonian. I used these for my never-finished wooden model. The plans were eye-opening to me because they show a vessel which differs significantly from all the other drawings I had found in post-war documentation.

Found this today, by chance; I had never seen before, and I think it is a contemporary sketch: http://tnsos.org/tsla/imagesearch/images/143.jpg

There were several resin versions of CSS Arkansas in 1/192 and 1/200 scale; both were pricey.
And I suppose you've seen the Maryland Silver website at: Ship Plans from the National Archives for Civil War plans from the National Archives at a variety of prices. Pictures of ACW ships of the Union (and captured ships) are at NavSource Auxiliary Ship Photo Archive Have fun with these, folks. Ken |
