I had some pretty sizeable deflections in the hull between the formers at the bow which I wasn't overly fond of. After some debate I decided that I was going to re-skin the hull, but that it should resemble real hull plating. Photos of the ship gave me a rough idea as to the vertical height of the plates, so I cut a number of them. The bow piece had to be a custom fit so I ended up spending a bit of time working that piece out.
The length of the plates was not based on any data, I just cut these to wherever I felt that it looked good on the model. Picture below shows the new skind being applied over the original printed parts.

Here we can see the completed re-skinning of the hull. I do like this better as the texture has more realism to it. I used bristol board for the new plating.

The profile of the hull plating at the bowon the model isn't quite what photos of the ship indicate. I penciled in what it should be and them trimmed it off. It looks good.

Bulwarks are seldom free standing. I added bulwark supports to the model at what ever looked good. Here you can see some are painted already. I tried to keep the color as close as possible. I do like the new paint color better than the original model color though, it just looks right.

Again, photos show detail that was not there. This time it is portholes in the hull amidships, so I added them too.

Since I am building the Travestein, I needed to put the name on it. The part has the name aligned in an arc but photos show the name aligned straight. To make them straight I am going to have to carefully cut them out and leave a small amount of conncetion betwenn the letters so I can twist them straight.

Here we can see the arced and straight lettering as compared to the photo. It is now evident that the letters are also too closely spaced together, so I am just going to cut each letter free and glue it on independantly.

Here we can see the name applied with a larger spacing as well as the original spaced part underneath. You can also see the 'natural' look of the re-skinned hull plating.

I didn't really want a 'clean' ship. I want that hard worked, long time at sea appearance, especially since I had that new hull plating on it. The weathering looks more significant in the photos that it does for real.... on the otherhand my eyesight isn't that great either - whatever, I still like it. New bow shield is on and it is more detailed (and in clolor register too).
