HMT Olympic My first ship model
Hello everyone.
This is my first built log on this site. For the last month and a bit since I have returned to the hobby, I have been working on Currrell's 1/1200 HMT Olympric as she was in 1918 as a troop ship. It has been a slow build as I sharpen up my skill set and set up a permanent hobby bench. I've been studying any images or graphics I could find to make sure what I was doing was as correct as possible and correcting any errors in this kit. I know there are things that could have been better, but I did find my skills improving as I have gone along. I have corrected the gun placement to their real world positions as apposed to was was described in the instructions. Have been in the process of installing all those little lifeboats and am not finished yet. I did synthesize the Captain's gig that was missing. I may do the rigging before I finish the rest of the lifeboats so they are not in the way and are placed properly. The masts are lathe turned toothpicks to get a more realistic look, are painted and ready for install. I'm always open for comments or questions. Jim |

Very nice and good work on a very tiny ship!
Have always liked the dazzle paint schemes.

Time for an update.
The masts were installed as well as the crows nest. There are still more life boats to construct and install, but felt I should move on to the rigging and finish them later. I was thinking of rigging the funnels, but thought that at this scale it would just be too much and detract from the rest of the model. Decided to go for a simplified rigging plan, but did want to show the antenna array. First up design a template for the array in CAD to try to keep it square and easier to construct. Then constructed the array on the template. Installed the down leads and trimmed the antenna. Installed the array to the masts then the fore and aft rigging to keep it somewhat taught. Carefully cut and mounted the down leads, as they also help to keep the antenna level. Then the side rigging for the masts. This is real fidgety at this scale. Now to finish the rest of those life boats. Jim |

Today I completed the HMT Olympic.
The last of the lifeboats were installed and some other details added. This kit came with a display card. This card was mounted to a piece of black foam board. The display label was cut out and laminated to two levels of card then mounted to the display card. I then released the ship from the keel board where she has been dry docked during construction and mounted her to the display card. This being my first ship build and my first build since returning to the hobby, I'm happy with the result. |

You've done a nice job on this little model!
Glad to see it build by another modeler as well. Jerry
