Schwarzer Rabe - fluit 1627 (Shipyard 1:96)
It was some 40 years ago when I built my first sailing ship, a Baltimore Clipper called Harvey, a wood model, which I finished then but which got lost in all those years. In autumn 2011 I re-discovered the hobby of making ship models and started to build HMS Victory, Caldercraft kit, wood. Then, last April I stumbled over the brilliant Victory made by Doris – the “paper version” and was absolutely speechless.
Since then I started to browse forums on paper models, read a lot about them and started building some of them during the last summer. I started with the Bald Eagle (Canon) – my very first paper model! Then followed several other – you can see them all in my gallery. As you can guess, I got more and more addicted. My wood Victory is not neglected, but in between I am working with card. A few weeks ago I started building my first paper ship: “Schwarzer Rabe” by Shipyard, 1:96. Schwarzer Rabe (black raven) is a typical fluit, a type of ship created in the Netherlands around the end of the 16th century. The fluits were common in Northern Germany, The Baltic Sea and had some features distinguishing them from other types of sailing ships. They had a characteristic round stern and special proportions of the hull: narrow deck (because Danish customs were charged according to the deck space) and wide lower hull since fluits were merchandise vessel and needed to store as much goods as possible. As a result of that the bulwark is strongly moving inside towards the deck. Schwarzer Rabe was captured by the Poles and was then one of the vessels of the victorious Royal Polish Fleet in the battle of Oliwa in 1627. Its original dimensions are: length approx.. 106 ft, width approx.. 7m. The card model will be 40,5 cm long, 16,8cm wide and 34 cm high. The vessel was armed with 8 cannons. In addition to the card model set I also bought a set with of lasercuts, and a mast-set. In the first few pics I will show you parts of the card set. Cheers, Rosmarie

Thanks to very accurate lasercuts, the frame was built very easily. After putting all parts together the whole hulk was already quite stable, even without any decks in it. I added a lot of glue and let everything dry out through the night.
Then I started with painting several parts black (where you will see down to the hull afterwards). Then I added several small parts of decks, completed the bow part and added the lower part of a deck. It was a joy to work with this set because all parts were perfectly cut and there was nothing to sand or cut. Cheers, Rosmarie

The sills for the gunports are from 1mm card and glued to the backside of the upper part of the first planking. They are coloured red.
Before glueing them in place, the bulkheads are planked with strips which are slightly overlapping. Finally, the inner planking of the bulkward can be glued in place.

Second planking was done with stripes of card, always 2-3 plankes in one stripe, nicely printed and well measured. The upper part (blue one) was done again with overlapping card stripes.
After second planking I could finish the inner bulkward with the vertikal reinforcements, many small peaces of card to be glued in place. Finally the wales could be cut and glued in place.
