Beautiful cutaway, I doubt I would have the patience to see a project like this through, but it certainly doesn't stop me from admiring the work of others!

Thanks Doug , it's not as daunting as you might think. There are a few parts that are trying but that's on the design side, the actual build is pretty straightforward. Thanks for looking in...

Thanks Mike, but in truth it was a quick build to provide proof of design, but these things do look good sitting around , and provide inspiration for further progress...

Great design & build. You should release that as a model as is.

Hello Mike,
In your comments you mention the lack of documentation for the CSS Virginia....might I ask what plans you did use? Also you have plans for constructiing a full hull model.....what scale will that be....if you have decided as of yet? I am a complete beginner in the card modelling arena and have just started to test the waters..... Your sectional build for the bow mounted Brooke is truly exceptional.....I absolutely love sectional models. Regards, Will |

First thing to buy is Ironclad Down, by Carl D. Park, great book on the construction to destruction of this vessel and the history surrounding her. You can get the plans from the National Archives, cartographic and architectural branch, records group 19, burea of ships. 15 drawings available. But this is the Merrimack, not the Virginia, those would be Porters plans, there are some plans on the Internet but these are going to show you the profiles and exterior views, these will get you the basic shape, but you will need to loft these sections in a cad program to come up with a 3d model. Then you will need to do the research on the interior, that is the hard part, and where you have to make decisions based on the original Merrimack drawings , and the oral history from written records Of people who were present through personal memoirs. Hence the book where most of the work has been done for you. I will post again with more reference material. My desktop is doing a reboot and backup, so this is from an IPad, and I have no access to that now. Wll try to do it for you tomorrow. As for scale I am now in the area of 1:72- 1:96 not sure which one yet, but I am going to laser cut the frames so it will be based on the 1 mm card that I am going to be using as to the final scale... Glad you like sectionals, they provide glimpses into boats that would otherwise be lost in small scales.

Thank you sir
You really think so, I could do that as it is not a killer to document this small section, not sure there is that great an interest in Civil War models though... Let me know your feelings on this...
