SS Ivernia, 1:200 scale
Here's my newest project. Krzychu 74 has released the SS Ivernia, a early 20th century Cunard liner, through Ecardmodels. This ship has special significance to my family, as it is the ship my maternal Grandfather's family emigrated to America on in 1914. They landed on Ellis Island on June 22, 1914, and the ship was requested by the British admiralty as a troop ship in July 1914, so they were probably on Ivernia's last American passenger voyage. The ship was torpedoed and sunk in 1917.
The model in 1:400 scale is 8 pages. I'm way too clumsy for such fine work, so I used a scanner to enlarge it to 1:200 scale. This turned 8 pages into 48 pages! The finished ship should be about 37 inches long. The model is waterline. Krzychu 74 is planning to release a full-hull add on kit, and I prefer full hull. Because I don't know what kind of modifications the skeleton will receive, I'm not starting in normal order. While I'm waiting for the add-on's release, I'm starting with the little detail things that get added on later. Here are the lifeboats in progress. There will be 18 of them. (And yes, I know it's a Zealot scale cube, but I couldn't find a Paper Modeler's cube.)

Hi, Vince!
Nice beginning and clean cuts! And don't be sorry for using another cube - as long as the squares are 1 cm² each, it's O.K. Kind regards, - Papercaptain |

The lifeboats are done. Poor lighting, not the camera's fault, it's mine.
As I was finishing the boats tonight I realized, the lifeboats represented Ivernia's end 96 years ago, yet they represent the beginning of this little ship. Next: the air vents.

Air vents
Built the largest air vents. Definitely not happy with the results. Krzychu 74 said they were one of the hardest parts of the build, and I agree. They obviously can be built much better, as seen in Krzychu 74's original build. And he's building it in 1/400, half the size of my model! Such talent by Krzychu 74 and Pulpetto!
Found an antique model of Ivernia being offered on eBay. Looks like it's made of wood. The air vents look quite different. And there are postcards online that Cunard issued of Ivernia and other Cuanrd liners, they are different still. Apparently it's up to the interpretation of the artist. So, I scratch made new vents, a bit more simplified than Krzychu 74's. Perhaps not as "historically accurate" as his, but they are the right size to match the ship, and they look a lot neater than the disaster I made of Krzychu 74's vents. After painting (the ones on the right), I think they look OK. Might trim the upper edge and try to flare the end out a bit, or might leave them be and not try to tempt fate. Who knows, maybe I'll try rebuilding them later to Krzychu's specs. But for now, I'll take a break from air vents and move on to something else.

I didn't explain this pic very well. Only the white part is the vent. The black parts are sections of drinking straws stuck into a piece of grey foam. The top part of the vent is stuck in the straw, and the longer white part sticking out at right angle is the bottom part.

Started the winches: In the second pic is the hole punch I found at Menards for $5. Really handy for the small circles.

And the bollards. Because of their small size I figured it was better to assemble them while the base is still on the card, then I will cut the cards apart and finish the edges when it is time to mount them on the ship. Here, some are painted and some are not yet.
