BB-63 USS Missouri 1/700 Scale

Hi, everybody. After finishing my 1/700 Scharnhorst, I'm starting my 1/700 BB-63 USS Missouri

Here are the first pictures comparing against the Scharnhorst. The Iowa class were the longest ship of the WWII

I based this model in the GPM 034, rescaling from 1/300 to 1/700 and surelly i'll need to rebuild some pieces like machine guns and similar in grapes, wire and so on

As allways, sorry for the pictures quality

Wow...seeing the two side by side makes you realize how big those US Fast Battleships were! Imagine seeing her running at 33 knots...breathtaking!

Looking forward to the build!

russ...

Awsome work, if I may ask where did you download the Missouri?
I would like to build it myself.

The Missouri is not downloadable, it is a pre-printed kit.

But can be purchased here: GPM - USS Missouri (BB 63 ) - 1/200

Or here: USS Missouri [KGPM242] - 110.00z? : Orlik Model Kartonowy, Sklep internetowy

And I am sure other outlets that I cannot think of right now.

Vortex, there are two GPM kits of the missouri, at 1/200 scale, but I'm building none of them.

What I made is take a scan of the older version (GPM 034) and resized it with a graphics editor to 1/700 scale. The newer one is too detailed to do in 1/700 scale!

Advancing... slowly but advancing.

Probably I'll paint the submerged hull, as the printer printed the color too striped.

As I decided to paint the sumerged hull, I'm doing the side keels and the four shafts. The propelers will be done later, maybe at the end of the assembly. As I made with the Scharnhorst, the hull will be barnished, sanded, and painted. The result will have not joins, like a plastic model.

There is an error in the GPM plans: the externals shafts must be glued at the end of the end of the part 14 and not in the middle od the part 15. In my picture, you can see the wrong position rounded in black, and the piece in the right one.

I included again a comparation with the Scharnhorst, to see the differences in size, hull form and bow design.

You must remember that the Iowa class are the largest (but not the heaviest) battleship of the history.

Slow progress. Here are two pictures of the shafts zone before painting the sumerged hull. You can see the test made to ubicate the external shafts.

I'm including another side-to-side with the Scharnhorst and two more after painting and finishing the bottom and lateral hull.

The first level of the superstructure is not attached, because the instructions are very sparse and difficult to understand. It applies just to the older (GPM034) version, the newer (GMP 242) is better, but as I said, has too many pieces to be done in 1/700 scale

Doing a bit of research in the book "USS Missouri BB63 Plan Book", I found that the deck colors (5-O and 20-B, are inverted in the GPM-034. The GPM-242 has the right colors.

I considered for a while to restart with the 242 model, but found more challenging to continue the one I have but repaint the decks and correct the camouflage mistakes.

So far there is the torret one installed, the breakwater, and two decks assembled but not installed. As allways, my 1/700 Scharnhorst is in the background for comparation, this time in its exposition box.
