Using the sails would be very economic too, unless there was no wind or it blew the wrong way. Is it a small ship, it might not have been able to carry much coal to fuel the engines.

But i agree with Mike and the others, those hybrid vessels just look good!

I am unsure why one pilot house or wheel house is smaller then the other, but this seems to be the case on a number of double ended style warships at the time of the Civil War. Even some of the pre-war ferry boats seemed to have this design.
