Paper-Card Ship Modeling Companies

Hello!

In my quest to become more knowledgeable about card ship modeling, I would like the Forum's input into these questions.

1. What are the major card ship modeling companies?
2. Which ones are the best?
3. Which ones should I avoid?
4. Where can I buy new kits?

Thank you all for the help that you have been so far!

Bill

Bill,

If I may go a bit off topic, why "Royal Navy Fan"? I spent some time in the 80's on an exchange tour with the RN. I have very fond memories of my time in Britain!

My experience with manufacturers is:

Digital Navy- their free HMS Dreadnought is a great place to start
Gremir- excellent kits (and service)
WAK- excellent
GPM- excellent
Modelik- my one experience with them ended in disaster (USS San Francisco was terribly inaccurate)

My past couple of orders have been from: kartonmodellshop.de I've been pleased with their service.

Best thing to do is to just start cutting...ability comes with practice (true of pretty much everything, I guess!!)

Hope this helps.

russ...

Also try David hathaway's Paper Shipwright site: Paper Shipwright | Card models from the UK

And several designers of ship models of varying quality sell their models via ECardmodels: ECardmodels.com Ships Paper Models

I myself like JSC's 1:400 waterline models. Have yet to find one (that is not a submarine) that I could not build into a decent replica. These are good ones to work on to develop basic skills too.

JSC make nice kits, and they do a nice model of Invincible, as well of a whole lot of other Royal Navy ships.

Google HMV or start here Schiffe 1:400 - Artikel - www.kartonmodellbau.de

Hello!

I chose "Royal Navy Fan" because, like most of you, I have studied Naval History my entire life. Although I served in the USN for 24 years, I had to give a nod to the traditions and legacy given to the USN by the Royal Navy. While my service has existed for over 200 years, the RN has existed for over 400. Hence, my screen name.

Ever since discovering this website, I have noticed a relative "niceness" between members not found on other sites. The help that I have been given by various members here has been phenomenal! I do appreciate it and hope to be a real contributor soon with my HMS Vanguard kit.

Thanks again!

Bill

I might also mention Kartona Flota (?....KEL's line of 1:350 scale ships) as a relatively low cost (actually, dirt cheap) line of ship models. I find it somewhat surprising that Wilhelmshaven and CFM haven't been mentioned. I highly recommend Orlik as a supplier...they have a good combination of excellent service, reasonable cost, both shipping and kit cost, and fast delivery so long as the air mail delivery option is used.

There is alo HMV that has pre-printed ship models. Based in Germany. Laser cut parts sheets also available. There is a supplier in Virginia with a store on Ebay. Saves on the shipping charges from Europe.
HMV paper models store on eBay

I don't know if Kartona Flota has a website, but Orlik has a fairly complete stock of their kits on hand, scale 1:300. If this link doesn't work, go to Orlik and do a manufacturer search for WIR. The 1:50 scale aircraft in the KEL line, which come up on that search as well, are largely Marek models.
