GPM Bismarck 1/200

I've done a few small ships before but it took me several years to work up the courage to tackle the Bismarck. I started with the upper works-forward because I thought, "If I finish the upper works, the hull will have to follow." And while some of the parts on the superstructure are fussy and downright tedious, I'm pleased with the results. And there are so many different tasks to be done on a ship model like this one that it is hard to get bored with repetitive little fiddly bits.

For the most part the fit and finish have been up to the usual GPM standards. The instructions are not always clear or complete but Jack Brower's book, The Battleship Bismarck, and online sources have helped.

I'm working on the after upper works next, then the hull. I considered making this a waterline model but decided to do the full hull.

I took the model to the Richard Bong IPMS Chapter in Milwaukee last night and got lots of oohs and ahs. It still surprises me that master plastic modelers are intimidated by paper models. For my part, I got into paper modeling because it seemed easier than plastic. Painting and decaling frustrated me to no end.

good work

it might be an interesting way to make a "section" of a ship if you want to work at a scale where you don't have room to display the whole ship

Superb work on the superstructure.

Every model that you build is oustanding. I admire and envy your skill and very much enjoy seeing the images of your beautiful models.

Good point. I have no idea how or where to display this behemoth when it's finished. I can hang airplanes from the ceiling (though I'm running out of airspace, too.) I feel a little bit like the guy who built a full-size airplane in his basement.

Great to see you working on this. I have this one on my to do list, but not sure when I will get going on it. Arizona still under construction.

But I have a link to a site you might enjoy...

Bismarck High Res | 3DHISTORY.DE

this is a digital model, accurate in all details. They made it as a digital set for live action shooting. About 23 images. It is amazing.
