Fort Drum - El Fraile Island - Pilsworth

Hello gentlemen...

It's high time I got back into the paper world, I've been in the plastic and resin world far too long. This time I've chosen Gary Pilsworth's recently designed model of a fascinating subject... Fort Drum (El Fraile Island). I've been intrigued with this subject for a long time, so it was great that Gary took up this recent design effort. For that I'm very thankful.

I've printed out all the parts on high quality ink jet paper. I've laminated the fort base and other heavy components to 80 lb stock. For the lighter assemblies like the barracks, water tanks and cage mast, I've laminated the ink jet bond to standard 20 lb copy bond. I wanted just a slightly heavier weight to deal with on those assemblies.

For reference I've had a copy of Francis J. Allen's "The Concrete Battleship" in my library some time. If I'm moved to do some additional details this will come in handy.

In the meantime I leave you with some start up photos of the laminated parts. I've already started with the formers for the island/fort base, but I'll post those pictures tomorrow. I've added some formers to the basic layout to get a more rigid inner core.

Thanks for following...

Thanks Michael and Gary. I appreciate the kind words of encouragement...

Tonight's update includes more shots of the progress. Formers in place. Added formers, and start of island fortress sides. The tunnel through which you enter the fort is a nice touch. Had to cut my added former to get that in, but the fit was superb.

Using gray Prismacolor markers for all edge coloring. Things swimming along at this point. No bumps in the road, just some of my own oversights. Having to cut formers that I added for the casemate gun emplacements as well. Didn't think about those when installing.

Fit has been like a glove to this point.

Hello EIB,

the extra formers were a good idea.
Maybe you add even one more frame between the original 1b and the casemate, somewhere beneath the second gun turret. That will provide better support for the deck, especially when you place the turrets on top.

I would also suggest to cut off the casemate wall part from the deck and glue it separately to the sides. It makes things easier to handle.

... my approach in 2 pics ...

Anyhow, i will follow your thread with interest of course.

Rgds
Peter

Thanks for the tip Peter.

I had the same thought on the casemate part attached to the deck. I'm going to make that an entirely separate assembly and clue it onto the face of the wall / edge of the deck.

nice build up photos there Peter.. Thanks for sharing.

Quick photo update tonight. I have all the sides on the formers of the fort. We're good and square there. Fit up has been good.

Going to start with the forward deck (lower) that is home to battery Marshall. This lower deck has triangular shape with bent sides. Attachment should be easy and the slanted face that makes the transition to the upper deck goes on next. I'll get into those tonight.

New photo update soon.
