Graf Zeppelin 1:700 Scale

Time for another build.

This time it's an aircraft carrier a german one, no less

Graf Zeppelin 1:700 Scale-gz-01.jpg

The model is freely available here:

RocketmanTan (Bryan Tan) on deviantART

Started by laminating the base to 2mm card and the rest of the formers including the deck to 1mm card

Reference material is a bit scarce, but evidence suggests a third lift. Also joined the sides together and cut out the boat decks.

A feature of the original was the casement guns on either side. Have had to modify the pointy end to model these properly

I downloaded this one, thinking about remodelling the guns instead of making them flat as the original has. Looking forward to seeing your build.

Interesting change of pace, Tim. I am interested to see what you do with this historic ship.

Started to add detail

Graf Zeppelin 1:700 Scale-gz-04.jpg

Keeping things simple and a bit chunky

Graf Zeppelin 1:700 Scale-gz-05.jpg

Added a bit of detail inside the lifts.

Plan to do a bit of painting then add the deck

Decks now glued on. Painted the underside first.

Planning to add extra detail to either ends

Pictures seem to show a lot of deck supports

Planning to use cocktail sticks

Great work thus far. I'm really enjoying watching this come together. Keep up installing the 'extras'.

Outstanding detail work on this. One of the things I like about Bryan's models is that they are easy enough for me to take on, but make an excellent canvas for creative folks to detail out. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your kind words gents

Graf Zeppelin 1:700 Scale-100_9843.jpg

Most of the 'island' is now built up. the two wood dowels have been rounded off at either end and will serve as the sighting domes

Will soak them in CA glue before cutting them off.

The island bits all done:

Graf Zeppelin 1:700 Scale-100_9861.jpg

Carved the main guns from wood.

Next stage is all the walk ways and gun platforms on either side.
