Rx'd the USS Oakland from Jason today (thanx, Jason) and will start a build thread shortly. I had posted an earlier topic about using chipboard, but seeing the number of frames involved, I think straight cardboard is all that is required. Since there is no english conversion in the kit, what would you all recommend for frame/keel cardboard thickness for a 1:200 ship?
On another note, Modelik has seen fit to equip the decks, from as far as I can tell, as metal vice planked wood. Was this the case for the Atlanta class cruisers? If not, I can substitute scribed basswood. Thanks,ya'll. This my favorite forum. |

I use 1 mm card for the frames and deck if the bow has a curved vertical section I usually soak it in superglue so it can be sanded and the point does not get bent too easily.

Here's the initial framing of the USS Oakland....various thickness of cardboard for the frames etc. Sanding has just been started. A complex model, the ship has a gorgeous hull and superstructure!!!!
Progress is a bit slow, but will update y'all as things progress. Kirk |

Hull plating and deck almost complete. Edges were colored with artists acrylic. Learned a few things along the way, specifically to thicken the frames and internal decks to give a better bearing surface....I didn't do this, so the hull is somewhat uneven. Pressing on, 'tho.

Hulls tend to take on that appearance after many hard and weather beaten years at sea.
Model is looking quite nice. How long is it? |

It's 1/200 scale, so the overall length of the hull is approx 32". I've considered using very small painted strips over the seams of the hull, but think it would be way too out of scale. I'll try to reduce the compression of the pics in the future for a better look at the details.
The Oakland was an Atlanta class anti-aircraft cruiser (light cruiser....CL) that earned nine battle stars during the war. She participated in most of the major South Pacific operations and escorted the Essex-class Lexington back home after extensive battle damage. Although I'm Canadian, I grew up in California....the last Atlanta-class cruiser was christened Fresno, my home town. Hope to see one of the major companies produce a 1/200 scale Birmingham-class cruiser in the future. |

Your hull looks great! Seems, as always, we are our own worst critic! Looking forward to the next!

On the subject of hull "wrinkling" - here's a good example...
Of course USCGC Acushnet was over 40 years old at the time. |
