Modelik USS Oakland

Does anyone know if the USS Oakland by Modelik is full-hull or waterline?

It is full-hull. Like most, it could be done as a waterline if that is your preference.

According to this page,

It's scale 1:200, full hull.

I recently received the USS Oakland... It is a great looking kit - the diagrams are extensive and there seems to be quite a bit of detail. It seems to want to get higher on my stack... perhaps it will see the light of day soon!

ROFLMAO....:D That sounds like my stack.... I only returned to card modeling 12 months ago and I already have a stack of 14 models (not including the freeware ones which must be running at about 50 or so that I liked the look of) You know that you kind of buy them because you really really want to build them. But I know that there are quite a few that I'll never actually get to, no matter how much time I have.

Best Regards,
Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

Sounds somewhat familar, Julian! I returned to paper about a year ago too.... Sold many of my other hobbies on eBay (Warhammer figures, wooden ship models, plastic etc etc) and made quite a bundle! Most has been reinvested in paper - roughly sixty books. And many on the hard drive! I guess if I live to be 400, I should get around to half of them!

The same here.

I think I'll have a lot of fun after I retire.

Maybe, there will be some words on my testament,

".. Go on, my son."

Though I'm 24 now. :D

I've got a stack of 50 something bought kits, and thanks to this forum, a dozen or more free ones I'd like to try.

So far my average is 1.5 finished a year, though some years I did nothing. In the past 2 years, I've finished 5!

Build thread coming shortly.....ordered it from Jason last night.

A question of purity: as the ship will be full hull, I want to get the smoothest finish possible. I see doing this by interpolating frames between the existing ones printed in the kit and using (gulp) lots of balsa. Is there a good practicium for card model hulls? Basswood for the keel?

I see card models as significantly more accurate in scope and subject (at least in steel ships) than what exists today in other mediums. In any event, I'll post the build thread as I start this late summer/early fall. I guess it's also a plea for advice (e.g. "if I were you, I'd.....").

The USS Oakland and her sisters were fine examples of a a ship built for a purpose. And like the Spitfire, purpose plus architecture equals art.
