HMS Onslow 1/700 scale

This is my third ship at 1/700 scale, an scale I find easy to store and challenging to do.

Due to the size, I start with a bigger scale, in this case the 1/200 scale modelik, and resize the plans. For printing and scalling issues, I use to print the ship without color, and paint while assembling it.

In this pictures the ship is being compared againt the turret and the rear side of the BB-63 Missouri. The 1/700 scale battleship is almost finished, and both ship are going to be made at the same time.

The total lenght is 15 cm

Hi Draco,

I have the Gremir Models release of the HMS Onslow in my stash to build so I will be checking this thread of yours out as you build your mini model. I have a hard enough time building them up in 1/200, one of the reasons that I switched from styrene to card. With the larger size comes greater detailing possibilities for me.

Great project, great ship.

I look forward to learning about your 1/700 building techniques.

Thanks, treadhead1952, thanks Don Boose.

Checking the book "Profile Morskie 72" about HMS Onslow, I find that the deck was a combination of dark blue gray and corticene instead of green and medium dark gray as the paper model said.

As I already planned to paint the ship, there is no problem. Just in case I'll check another internet fonts.

The change of scale makes very hard to make the ribs cuts as designed, so I printed the vertical longwise profile in a piece, flued the horizontal waterline profile amd decks, and later started to cut the waterline profile to glue the ribs, as can be seen in this pictures. It helps me to put the pieces in place. The imperfections in the cut will be removed before gluing the sides. And the sides will probably be painted, sanded and painted again to smooth the angles

This ship seems to be easier to build that my BB-63 Missouri and Scharnhosrt, both at the sam scale. I expect to finish the Orlow by the last days of December.

Interesting build. I hvae a few questions. If you hve answered them before just point me to the thread.
1. When you rescale do you just shrink when printing? Or do you make any modifications to the images for the new scale?
2. How do you decide what "fiddly bits" to include or ignore?

Again great work!

Hi, Lrjanzen
I use Photoshop or Photostyler to resize the pieces, remove the hull color and join the vertical and waterline profiles.

I have another two 1/700 ships made, one BB-63 Missouri and one Scharnhorst, here you will find many details about this small scale construction.

Sorry if I can give you more details, but I just have a retinal damage and must start a two weeks rest. And I'm sure I'm making a lot of typing mistakes, same reason.

So, more new in crhistmas!

Well, after the operation I still can do some small things untill full recovery.

I finished the hull squeleton, less two ribs that I feel are unnecessary at this scale.

This is a simple shape hull, So I'm going to do the underwater are with "big" shets of paper, two or four ribs at once. It must improve the look at closer range, too.

Or you could buy the 1/700 Skywave/Tamiya plastic kit at 1/700 scale.

But I design my cardstock models for 1/700 wargame use.

I've got the Navigatori class destroyer, Abruzzi class light cruiser, and ... 2 mystery classes of closely akin designs ... about ready for my book.

For British destroyers, I've got the the H class and H leader (Hardy), L&Ms, and L/AA ... oh! and also the Tribals and JKNs.

And, Oleg, I'm planning on starting with the early war Moskva class flotilla leaders when I someday get to Red Navy ships.
