MNF Galilee & Lavoisier 1:250 - GBM

Camping season 2009 is upon me next weekend and since that for me consists of hiking, boating, photography, grilling and paper modeling, I need something smaller to build alongside Zuikaku. The camper just doesn't have room for that beast. I've been wanting to build one of Carl's designs ever since I first laid eyes on them maybe two years ago, so I am going to build both versions of the Lavoisier kit. Galilee will be in Mediterranean black and Lavoisier will be in Foreign Service grey.

It looks like an excellent kit and I've been drooling over it for a while It will be nice to build a kit with instructions I can read too! I printed both versions out on regular Xerox card stock and HP bright white inkjet paper on my trusty Canon Pixma iP6000D

Now for some former laminating before bed...

A twofer no less for camping! Nice choice of subject material. I am planning on getting one of these as well since Micheals' software allows for rescaling to my favorite scale, 1/200.

Watch out for them ticks and chiggers out there in the wilds of Tejas.

Great! I look forward to seeing your builds of the two GBM cruisers, even if it means a delay in the Zuikaku build.

Jim, I just sent some update pages to Mike/Gremir that reflect a few flaws that Ron found for me.

Sheets 1 and 2 are updated to tweak the depth of slot for frame 3 - not necessary so don't worry about it - and fix the labeling on frame 1 that marks location of "3" as "8". Again not necessary but annoying.

More seriously, sheet 5 (I think) with the spardecks has a pair of issues. First the grey version has the ledge at the aft part of the cutout colored brown. It actually could be ignored since it is almost completely covered by a structure on top. Or you could print an extra side piece on plain paper and mask it (if you don't want to do a reprint of the sheet). The other flaw is that the two bent ventilators that mount on the main deck should have semicircular cutouts for them where they pass through the spar deck. Again, not show stopping since you can eyeball them and cut them out.

Then, the numbering on Sheet 8 for aft spardeck parts is all messed up. It is correct on the actual spardeck from Sheet 5. The Diagram at the bottom of Assembly 3 is also correct except for one duplicated part number (I forget which, sorry). The visuals from the diagram should help.

Oh, so it's my first time putting out a kit. That's my excuse.

Good luck with it and do us proud!

Carl

Of course everybody else will get the replacements as well.

Thanks Carl & Mike. I've the new part printed out and I've started cutting some formers now. This is going to be a very solid framework with all the tabs and slots.

Excuse? Few if any model designers would be so exacting in updating their models to be exact and easily buildable. You certainly have started on the right foot, IMHO. I look forward to seeing more build threads of your designs Carl, including these

I got most of the formers cut out (just remembered while typing that I've got a couple thinner ones left to do). They were kind of a pain to cut out with all the slots and tabs, but well worth it after dry fitting everything seeing how everything fits perfectly. The stern needs to be beveled to the line on the part as you can see in the photo. Then the printing will actually be on the bottom. I can hardly wait to get these frames glued up!

Looking forward to seeing this frame come together. You deserve the "Medal of Honor" for having two (or is it three) boats going at the same time!

Looks like the usual precision redhorse work, Jim. I like to think of you working away on this paper model in the evenings in your camper.

Meanwhile, I am saving your and Ron's comments and photos just in case I actually decide to try to build one of these beautiful, and beautifully designed, but (to me) intimidating models.
