A superb model and an interesting discussion of the details of the ship. The modifications made to a ship during its life are a fascinating subject and in many cases resulted in great alterations in the appearance of the ship.

Regarding the "Tiny Balconies" Renaud refers to . . .
Here is an image of the area of Chanzy in question. It comes from a very large drawing I have of the ship. I cropped this section to reveal some detail that may answer some of the questions about the architecture at the bow and stern. It would seem from this drawing, that those were intended as "Searchlight Platforms/Enclosures".

Indeed you're right, Mike..

this is the use of such "sponson" looking at the draw..

In any case, I got another pics (source site : russia-best.com) of the Chanzy (but could be another unite of same class) that show clearly the sponson at the ster, while is not well understandable if there is also at the bow or not.

Anyway..thanks to Lighter.. I had such reference pic, where it's clearly visible the sponson both on bow that at the stern....

So...Orel do not made a mistake.. :-)

ciao and happy paper modeling

Warship 2014, which just arrived in the past couple of weeks, has an article on the Admiral Charnal class cruisers. In the article for the caption of the picture that Lighter posted it says: "Chanzy during trials. Note the structures on either side of the bow. which were intended to house searchlights; they were removed before she entered service."

Beautiful model! (makes me want to break out some of my pre-dreadnought kits!)

Good information Russ.
So, perhaps the builder has the option of building it per the architects drawings, or as she entered service. Would she be historically correct either way?

Yes... you're right...both version could be historically correct....

Lookig at the kit, there are a couple of work to do, if someone would make a model of Chanzy in years of her naval service :

1) erase from the lateral piece of the upper hull every white line that show where glue the sponson

2) cut the upper bridge straight, taking out the upper part of sponson and re-draw (and recolor) the waterway and the other lines that follow the side of the bridge.

ciao

If you really want to be correct, the under hull should be green, not red, right, Renaud.

It is a very fine build either way, JP!
