It means that there is a lot of difference.

If you want the British "S" Class, than you will not want the American "S" Class. They don't resemble each other at all. The American subs were designed earlier, and to a totally different set of requirements.
British WW2 S Class Submarine 1931-1966
American Early WW2 S Class Submarine - 1918 - 1946

I seem to recall that there were a couple of early British subs called the "S" class that were transferred to Italy early in WW1.

Not being an expert on the British Navy, I can't help you much more than that. However, we do have several on this board, perhaps they can help out.

.... and let us not forget that the Soviet Navy had it's own distinct and successful "S" class of submarines.
