I finished the little guy. Need to work on my skills for ships this size.

I think your skills at that size are already evident. Your work is excellent in my book. Do you find you need magnification to do the work?

Another silly question:
What are you using for your masts? The results are very nice and in scale from what I can tell. Doug |

Thank you for the replies (^_^)
elliott I don't use magnification at this time. It is something that I am thinking of using when I can find a good set to buy. goergerutheford1861 The masts are made of copper wire as suggested by warartisan, only difference is the gauge I use is smaller. I'm using 18ga for the fore and main masts. The mizzen is a 22 gauge wire. For the sails I use 24ga wire. The lengths of the masts were cut to 75 percent as written in the directions. I started a 74 gun ship of the line. Experimenting with tiny cannons at this scale seeing if I can add more detail to these tiny models. Feed back is appreciated. (^_^)
Starting fall quarter tomorrow, so updates could be slow going for a bit. |

Well, that looks awesome!! It's tough to build cannons at that scale but you've done a very credible job of it...what are you using for the barrels?
got to get some spiders to help you rig the guns...LOL!! :D Cheers! Jim |

Well done! Didn't know they came that small.

Looking good! I can only echo Jim's question "What", on earth, "did you use for barrels?" Also, what do you plan to use for rope? How much gun rigging do you plan to do? Lastly, do you have suitable blocks/eyebolts?
Tell Jim to hurry up with those spiders - you're gonna need them.

this is what I did for my 1:250 scale model of USF Constitution...but that ten larger than this, eh? LOL!! At this scale the concept is to give the "impression" of the small details you are trying to portray, rather than going crazy trying to actually recreate the part...so, using a bit of strands from thread, hardened with glue and using drops of painted glue to represent the actual blocks, you might be able to pull it off...of course, the long guns used a much different set of train tackles than the carronades required, so there's that....
Looking forward to more pictures as you continue!! Cheers! Jim |

Wow, thanks for the feed back.
The cannons are made from 24 gauge copper wire painted black. They are smaller then the tip of my finger nail. Don't know if I am going to try rigging for the guns on this build yet, I am still trying to figure out what kind of micron size thread I can find to use to even do something like rig these guns. Jim, nice rigging on those cannons, one day I want to do something like that in the 1/300 scale with a 74 gun ship. The 74 gun ship of the lines are my favorite sailing ships. |
