Very interesting design...when she went into action were the masted dismounted? I'm asking because a. I hate rigging sailing ships, b. the lines for the rear mast seem to block the line of fire for the turret, and C. IMHO she would look very clean and smooth less the masts and rigging...

That is an interesting question. By the time of the Civil War many steem gunboats such as the USS Hartford would partially demast when using steam only on the river. I have no idea what that actually intails. Other ships including some ironclads were designed to have sails and masts stowed, at least on the drawing boars. So it is in interesting question.

Hello
No.. for this ship, during the actions, masts and righings were not dismantled.
This because 2 reasons :
1) the Armstrong gun in the forecastle coukd shot only through the front opening or the lateral hatches of the forecastle.
2) the ironclad turret was not turnable, but fixed and the two other Armstrong guns inside the turret were able to fire only through four fixed hatches, firing in diagonal sight (not broadside). In this way the shoots cannot hit the masts and fixed riggings.

Ciao
Jp

CSS Stonewall 1:200 Heinkelmodels

I have been building this Heinkel Models kit but as the Prussian ironclad Prinz Adalbert and scaled down to 1:250. I have been unable to work on it for the past eight weeks but I am back and will post my progress very soon.

SMS Prinz Adalbert, 1865 - 1:250 scale
