accomodation hulk SMS Oldenburg

Hello everyone!

Even nowadays miracles do happen. I, for instance, have actually finished a model recently! It's an accomodation hulk of the Imperial German Navy (just In case that you think a hulk has to be green and bad tempered in any case have a look at the wikipedia entry).

My model is hypothetical because it's based upon the SMS Oldenburg. But the Oldenburg was never an accomodation ship, she ended her career as target vessel. However, two other casemate ships of the IGN, the SMS Hansa and SMS Kaiser were, so my model is just a kind of "poetic licence", not complete nonsens!

Obviously, I've chosen the Oldenburg because the Pro-Model/GreMir model is already available. Basicly, I used the kit's hull and added the wooden superstructure. I've changed the colours from buff/black to the canonical grey/black and replaced the texture of the wooden decks with something more realistic. I've also redrawn many of the smaller parts (vents and davits in particular). There's also a complete construction report at Kartonbau.de. It's in German lingo only, but a good deal of the images are selfexplanatory.

Said enough, here come the photos:

And finally a little fake, powered by Photoshop. The location is Kiel, one of the two main bases of the IGN.

Bye!

What a wonderful fake! You really should have started the thread with that picture to perpetrate a small hoax, then let us in on the secret. In either case, that is a really cool model. I never knew about that type of vessel until now.

Thank you

Excellent work on a "kitbashing" project. It is very easy to work with Micheals' kits to work up various iterations of ships. Changing things around often yields up some very creative designs.

You have created a plausible alternate universe.

Fine model building and photo art work.

Thank you all for your positive replies!

Well, if you do insist, I'll put the fake first next time. Actually I've already fooled Peter Crow (or did he fool himself by not reading my explanations?) with the postcard and I didn't want to be too mischievous!
