Hmmm? I can't make up my mind\whether I like this or not. It's certainly got "Style". My first thoughts were ... If it was painted red and in a Dan Dare comic strip, ... I'd probably love it.

my dad was a deck hand on this boat. I remember old family photos of my dad on the car deck. The cars sorta looked like this also.

Beauty, or not, it is certainly iconic! What strikes me is, at 280 feet long, and who knows what displacement, it is only a single screw. Must have taken a very skilled pilot to get her into a berth on a windy day!

There are no paper models of the Kalakala, nor any other Washington State ferryboat. I'd very much enjoy building these in 1/400 scale (to go with my ocean liners and such). I wonder why the lack of interest?
Sorry to see the Kalakala gone... another memory from my childhood. Best regards, Kurt |

No so much a lack of interest as the lack of dimensioned drawings available for reference.

Oh, I had not realized there weren't drawings anywhere. Length and width are available online, but that's quite different from having all the measurements needed for designing a model. Thank you for pointing that out to me.

Found these somewhere, hope they help. She ran between Victoria BC and Port Angeles Wa when I was a kid. I won the odd day trip by selling newspaper subscriptions.

Wow! It looks quite a bit different between above water and underwater than I thought!
Thanks! Kurt |
